Museo Tamayo and Independent Curators International, are partnering to host the digital version of The Backroom. Initiated in 2005 by Magalí Arriola, Kate Fowle, and Renaud Proch, this research project brings together videos, music, photographs, ephemera, anecdotes, or any action or artifact that feeds the artistic practice of creators from various disciplines. In its digital edition, guest curators will be presenting what nourishes and informs the practices of three artists every two weeks from September 2020 to January 2021.

The Backroom is a space where to discover and navigate art from a perspective that, beyond the artistic object or artifact, reveals how it is a continuous and relational exercise. Objects of desire, personal archives, libraries, artistic research, music, routines, films, biographies; art is in a permanent exchange with the world that surrounds it.

VIGIL GONZALES se complace en presentar Lo que dejamos fuera, primera exhibición de la galería concebida y ejecutada de manera exclusivamente digital que reúne series icónicas del trabajo de las artistas C.J. Chueca, Natalia Iguiñiz y Karina Skvirsky.

Las obras exhibidas en el Online Viewing Room de la galería acuden a una noción del territorio y a nuestra relación con el mismo a través de diferentes aproximaciones. Así, no solamente las propias características de la galería virtual invitan a pensar sobre el estado actual de nuestra civilización ―¿no es acaso internet un espacio heterotópico que se revitaliza y encuentra una nueva función?, ¿no aparece, aquí, tal vez, como un heterotopía de crisis universal?―, también las obras nos interpela con una interrogante crucial: ¿no es el territorio, del cual hoy estamos recluidos, y las relaciones que en este se han dado a lo largo de la historia lo que nos dota de identidad?

Karina (lives and works in New York) is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice began from photography and then was developed in the video and performance. Skvirsky starts her interest in photography from an early age in the middle of a discovering identity while organizing a family photo album. As an artist, skvirsky, excel in telling stories through images (whether static or in motion), usually using the technique. His video the perilous journey of Maria Rosa Palacios and the series of images the railroad workers, traces a parallelism between a teen's journey through the mountains of Ecuador and the indigenous and Jamaican workers who built one of the most dangerous railway routes in the world.
